The ‘Design for Retail Experience’ (DRE) PG Programme offered at NID R&D Campus, Bangalore commenced in June 2007 in NID R&D Campus with 15 students in the 1st batch.

This program was conceived strategically, looking at the booming Retail Industry in India over the last decade. Designing delightful, effective and friendly shopping experience becoming the market differentiator for many competing brands today, this PG program has been tailored to fit this need.

The programme is designed for the candidates from various backgrounds and looks at the retail industry in a holistic manner.

Stylistically since Indian retail has been inspired from west, therein lay a challenge to understand the Indian consumer psyche and behavior. The program brings in an understanding of consumer lifestyles and aspirations in order to visualize and create new concepts and design strategies in shopping experience.

Courses such as Design fundamentals & principles, Retail research, Retail spatial design, Retail communication & branding, Retail furniture & fixtures, Packaging, Retail Store Design & Visual merchandising, Retail systems & management are dealt with in a theoretical and project mode in the curriculum. Throughout, students are encouraged to study formats panning traditional kirana to modern organized and the international to gain insights to Indian retail system behavior and dynamics.

Every project based course follows a design process & methodology essential for the student to arrive at creative and informed design directions.  Field visits to diverse retail markets, manufacturing facilities and exposure to domain specific national events, lectures and interaction with Industry domain experts is an integral part of the curriculum. During the program students also get International exposure through Students Exchange Programme of NID with design schools overseas.

This programme has been developed to build aesthetic sensibility and design competence as well as knowledge of the professional aspects of conception and presentation, managerial skills and provision of requisite skills to put various design ideas systematically into practice.
