Dr. Aakash johry

Dr. Aakash johry is a play designer, presently teaching as Associate Faculty at the Toy and Game Design discipline at NID. He holds a PhD in Design from IDC school of Design, IIT Bombay titled as “Generative playfulness dimensions of play artefacts for children with special needs”, where he looked at the construct of playfulness and engagement for children with ID and how it could be augmented through design of play artefacts. Aakash completed his Masters in Design from Design Programme, IIT Kanpur with focus on user experience design, and Bachelors in Technology in Mechanical Engineering from IIITDM Jabalpur.

Prior to joining NID, Aakash has had an active involvement in academics and research. He has been involved in a number of courses at IDC including Game Design, Smart Media, Interactions Media and Sensories, etc. He has developed a course titled ‘Designing for Children – Play and Learn’ available on the D’Source online platform. Aakash has publications in a number of National and International conferences and magazines, including 19th IPA World Conference, Turkey and EduLearn15, Barcelona. He has co-conducted multiple workshops for school children, design college students and industry practitioners from topics ranging from Origami and animation to Playful design and gamification.

At present, Aakash is teaching in several courses at NID including Research Methodology, Media and Technology, Design Projects, Human factors and Fundamentals of Visual Design. His core interest areas in research and practice include Player-centric Design, Design for special needs, Interactive media, and Design research. Apart from academics, he likes to design board games, and experiment in form and space using Origami.
