Research & Publications

Research at NID has traditionally been grounded in practice, especially in the field work conducted by its faculty, staff, and students over the last several decades. They have been able to translate these contextual findings into the design of products, processes, services, and systems, which in turn have had a significant social and cultural impact at a national level. Over the last few years, NID has established the following Research Chairs in Design, in collaboration with industry partners: The Jamsetji Tata Research Chair for Universal Design, NID Asian Paints Colour Research Chair, Jindal Stainless Chair at NID for Product Design Innovation, John Bissell Chair for Research in the area of Textile and Apparel Design Technology, Autodesk-NID Research Chair in Design Education and Innovation. The institute also hosts the Ravi J. Matthai Design Research Chair for Design Innovation and Management and the Charles Eames Design Emeritus Fellowship from its own corpus. The aim of these initiatives is to foster original work in the field of design in India. This initiative has recently met with commercial success.

The dissemination of research is actively encouraged in the form of publications, especially books, monographs, and craft and course documentations to name a few. These publications reflect India’s diverse and dynamic socio-cultural and economic scenarios wherein perspectives on research in design, practice, and education have been appropriately interwoven with the contemporary concerns of sustainability and development. The institute actively motivates its students and faculty members to nurture the spirit of research. NID firmly believes that teaching, practice, and research are interdependent, and are essential for creating new knowledge and enriching design education.
