An award-winning sound designer, filmmaker, educator, and researcher with over 20 years of professional experience across education, research, and creative practice, Hitesh Chaurasia is a graduate of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, and holds a PhD in Design from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. His doctoral research explored sound design in Cinematic Virtual Reality (Cine-VR), with a focus on spatial sound, audience perception, attention, orientation, and immersive storytelling, resulting in the development of the SONIC Framework.
He is the founder of Dantkatha Media, a sound design and media studio exploring sound across different mediums and forms. His professional practice spans diverse media and formats, including feature films, documentaries, short films, television, web series, commercials, radio, digital content, and immersive media. His collaborations include Fox Films, BBC, NFDC, PSBT, Y Films, Sony, Channel V, 92.7 BIG FM, TISS, and Kaleidoscope. He is the recipient of the V. Shantaram Best Sound Award for Gajar and was nominated for the Screen Award for Best Sound for Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain. His short film Second Best, which he wrote and directed, was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival of South Asia and the International Children’s Film Festival of India.
His teaching and research explore sound as a medium and material, with interests in spatial sound, immersive filmmaking, Cine-VR, and emerging forms of cinematic experience. His research has been published in international academic journals and presented at conferences, and he has conducted workshops and masterclasses in India and internationally. He has served on academic and advisory bodies at film and design institutions. He is also the Festival Director of the Alpavirama International Youth Film Festival and the founder of Cine Bazaar.
