I worked in the design studio of Satya Paul for my project. I was as an apprentice to the head designer for the Autumn-Winter (08-09) collection with a nouveau riche look through heavy embellishments, graceful motifs, intricate embroidery and chic silhouettes. The nouveau riche garment line was initially focused on dresses, but now has expanded its horizons towards different silhouettes like poncho tops, shirt dresses and SKD (salwar –kameez – dupatta). For this collection, I developed a range of garments which looked as charismatic as the signature collection, operating within budget specifications.
We started with theme-based research. After that I conceptualized ideas for techniques as well as clients, silhouettes and their detail lines. Since Satya Paul caters to a clientele of varying age group, the styles of garment cannot be similar. So, the styling is based on the client classification. I learned many new techniques such as textured foiling, flocking, hand brushstrokes as well as the art of combining different techniques in one garment so beautifully that it will automatically provide a rich look.
Although the garment line is very new and has been introduced in only a few stores of Satya Paul, I am thrilled that it is getting being appreciated by many buyers.
My key learning has been a sensitivity to the immense amount of hard work embroidery karigars and tailors put in, in order to make a single piece of an ensemble. My project has been a phenomenal experience both in terms of design training and personal growth. |
