My project, ‘The Business of Design’ aimed to generate a sustainable business model for an independent design studio, Studio ABD, using the internet as a platform for communication and commerce.
Unlike other design studios that are primarily focused on servicing clients, Studio ABD is aiming to be the first studio to launch their own unique brand of range of Indian products and experiences.
I commenced my project with research on different successful Indian brands across industries -fashion, bollywood, automotive, etc. I explored the essence of what made a brand ‘Indian’ and extrapolated from that. I also studied how the internet as a medium can be exploited for communicating and reaching out to potential customers across segments.
I eventually came to the conclusion that in order to develop a successful business model for the brand, it was imperative that the parent company have a strong and sustainable revenue model for itself without having to depend on ad-hoc projects. To this effect, my focus was then revised to develop the marketing plan for the studio while retaining the focus of using the internet as a medium, thus shifting my focus from brand building to marketing.
My final design deliverables involved setting the design specs for a new marketing website for Studio ABD, detailing out the information architecture and also art directing the visuals that went on it. The entire project then became a collaborative effort with multiple designers and copywriters creating an exceptional user experience. The most interesting experience of my project was trying to understand the nuances of 'Indian design'. |
