My diploma film is a documentary about the livelihood of a eunuch. Brought up in a society where people do not openly talk much about them, I thought this was my chance to explore their lives. The idea was to give them a platform where they could talk about their lives, their needs, their experience of being in the common man’s society.
The initial idea was generated when I read an article about a festival celebrated by eunuchs every year. I made the film in three segments and accordingly, I profiled three eunuchs. One, was a eunuch who has achieved something in life; two, who aspired to become something in life; and three, the one who still relied on begging as a source of income.
After the preview, when I started editing, I faced the problem of selecting the shots. There were a lot of interviews, but problems lay with the camera work. Gradually, I solved that problem, and added voice over and music by professional people.
The making of the film helped me evolve not only as a filmmaker, but also as a person. When I started the pre-production, there was a time when eunuchs refused to be part of the film. Had I lost heart, I would never have made the film. During my journey, I discovered sides to people who, were a part of my society, but were unknown to me. |
