My diploma film is a fiction film about complexity in human life. The plot has three main characters: Raghu, Aditi and Ananth. Raghu is attached to a mob whose plan of pulling off a bank heist has gone terribly wrong. Wounded in the encounter, Raghu takes refuge in a villa owned by a 45 year old widower, Ananth, and his 24 year old daughter Aditi. Here, he witnesses Ananth forcing himself on his daughter. Raghu is caught in a dilemma; incidentally, Raghu’s gang arrives and he gives his gun to Aditi. The film necessitates a long debate as it can have various endings.
My main intention was to explore film language through this complex plot and try to build the film in a linear mode. I wanted to explore the grammar of film language. Containing audience interest for 18 minutes in a linear story telling mode is a challenge in itself.
I decided to call the film 42 Primestreet because the plot unfolds in this villa. Primestreet also happened to be the street we were shooting in. I felt that the ambiguity would help the narrative as well as add a chance element to the story.
Overall, my diploma film was a great learning experience. The theory which I learnt in NID actually came into practice in making a self sponsored film. I believe, I have been largely successful in getting viewers hooked on the film narrative. |
