Pravinsinh Solanki is a design educator and practitioner, currently serving as the Discipline Lead for Furniture and Interior Design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. With a Master's degree in Furniture and Interior Design from NID, Solanki brings a wealth of expertise and experience to his role. As the head of the Skill Development Lab at NID, Solanki is dedicated to fostering innovation and creativity in his students. He emphasizes sustainability and social impact through projects that have a global reach and strengthen industry-academia relations. With over 18 years of diverse work experience in India and Italy, Solanki has excelled in architectural design, interior design, craft development, and product innovation.
Since joining NID in 2013, Solanki has mentored numerous graduation projects and classroom initiatives, resulting in national and international acclaim. His teaching philosophy revolves around active engagement, hands-on learning, and real-world experiences, empowering students to become design entrepreneurs. Solanki's commitment to social impact is evident in his initiatives such as the "Jail Se" project, which involved designing products made by inmates of Sabarmati jail. He has also led projects focused on sustainability, repurposing materials, and empowering marginalized communities.
On a personal level, Solanki has received numerous awards for his innovative bamboo products, some of which are displayed at international venues such as the World Bamboo Museum in South Korea. He is also a respected jury member, guest speaker, and TEDx presenter, contributing to design discourse globally. Solanki's dedication to design excellence extends beyond academia, as he actively participates in outreach and consultancy projects for various organizations and events, including international book fairs and workshops. As a founding member of the India Bamboo Forum, he continues to champion sustainability and innovation in design.
