Swagata pursued her graduation in Architecture and earned her Post Graduate Diploma in Ceramic and Glass Design from NID in 2007. Owing to her interest in understanding the impact of design on objects, structures, people and practises through the lens of material and materiality, she worked in diverse sectors covering craft, architecture, product development, education etc. She has headed several long term and short term projects related to craft development. Notable among the projects is her engagement as a Cluster head for Firozabad Glass Flamework craft cluster under the USTTAD scheme by Central government which required documenting, assessing and product development for the artisans of the cluster apart from creating marketing linkages for them for sustained visibility and livelihood opportunity.
Parallelly, owing to her personal interest she continues to work on voluntary projects/events related to communal harmony, gender equality and environment protection. In the recent years she has forayed into the domain of Art, celebrating collaborative energies of craftspeople and designers through artifacts that have been displayed at SAF(Serendipity Art festival, Goa) and Indo Korean art exhibition.
She has been an educator with the Ceramic and Glass Design discipline since 2010. At NID, Swagata teaches courses related to design fundamentals to the foundation programme like Geometrical Construction.
Ceramic and Glass being a material centric discipline, to develop skill with material, appreciation, possibilities and locating relevance in the built world, she offers courses related to Glass. Her interest in the science of materials, special needs and possibilities with technology has led her to offer design projects- particularly Complex design Project to bring focus to critical evaluation and optimisation in product production keeping in mind user’s socio-cultural association, needs and value in the process of design.
Apart from Education Swagata’s interests span across areas like History of Architecture and Design, Design Research, Human Behaviour, Material Chemistry, Paper Folding and Mountaineering.
