ICNF is an exploratory Research & Development Lab with ‘innovation’ as its core objective is located at the National Institute of Design Gandhinagar campus. The creative approach, backed by a history of teaching and training in design since last 60 years of NID guides ICNF to look forward to India’s natural fibre capabilities, resources and contribution towards sustainability through a design driven approach. NID has already undertaken significant work in education, research and practice, on design interventions using different types of natural fibres. It has set up an Innovation Centre for Natural Fibre (ICNF) with a focus on capacity building in natural fibres development and utilization through innovation in design, engineering and technology. The centre has prioritized some natural fibres of national importance such as Banana, Bamboo, Coir, Hemp, Jute and Water Hyacinth for exploration. In this pursuit, it is networking with institutions within India and abroad, to find appropriate and sustainable designs applications using these fibres as a primary material. Also, significant benefits to the local and national economy can be attained with a focused programme that can leverage design and technology for sustainable livelihoods, as well as create appropriate and sustainable solutions for society and market of tomorrow.
The mission is to grow capacity and opportunities for research, creative and innovation activities in the areas of Natural Fibres or Materials at ICNF by engaging available skills, partners and resources, leading to the discovery of new knowledge that can have transformative academic, economic and social benefits for the local region, nation, and beyond.
ICNF focuses on the vision to create an innovation driven research culture in areas of sustainability, Natural Fibres and Materials with the support of state-of-the-art infrastructure and efficient support services, enabling ICNF researchers to explore cutting-edge local, national, and international research with respect for humanity, society and environment.
