The project brief was to make a 2D animation film of approximately two minutes for GEER Foundation promoting various kinds of conservation processes (this being soil conservation) to help maintain the balance in the ecological system.
The project scope included concept making, working exposure with government, storytelling in a narrative format, making short animation films for promotion of other issues related to conservation of the environment.
The inspiration for the story came from long interaction with tribal communities. The story was written in such a way that instead of informing them about the laws of forest protection and punishment clauses, we should underscore the necessity of forest conservation for their own welfare and sustenance.
I felt that the communication should act at a philosophical level rather than at information level (such as providing statistics etc.) while communicating with illiterate people. In fact, I found that talking about the basic wisdom of nature was the best and most effective form of communication as it appealed to the emotions of the local people. I also emphasised that the Forest Department and the local people had a common goal to achieve which was conservation of natural resources.
The project was actually a journey which ended on a pleasant note because the film was approved by the government and is about to be shown on Doordarshan and also in City Pulse multiplex in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. |
