The project brief consisted of creating a series of spots or short animated identities for the children’s channel-Nick India to be aired between shows. One of the main criteria specified in the rather open brief was to look and sound noticeably different from the usual approach, in order to surprise and entertain the audience. The medium required not much in 3D, but certainly using high quality claymation or 2D animation. The spots needed to reflect Nickelodeon’s playful and irreverent attitude. They were also required to convey a distinct Indian flavour, both visually as well as in terms of the sound design.
One of the main challenges was to create a look that was unique- as specified in the brief- but at the same time consistent with the Channel’s widely recognised brand identity and visual language. The spots were to have a central character, who would then become a mascot for the channel.
The final products or deliverables at the end of the project included a series of animated to music identities called Symphonick, and a spot on the occasion of Sankranti or the kite festival.
I learned much from pitching concepts to the client, to the finer details of animation production, to working with the sound designer and editing studios, and most importantly, working within tight deadlines without allowing the quality of work to deteriorate. |
