This invitation package has been curated to showcase the selected unique artisanal handicraft from Southern states of India which shows the culture and tradition through the material and skills. This initiative also aims to spotlight the products featuring One District One Product (ODOP) and Geographical Indication (GI) schemes. Following is some of the highlight of the kit.
Pochampally Ikat fabric: Telangana
Pochampally is renowned centre of the Ikat technique of weaving, with unique motifs and colours. The removable fabric base in the invitation box can be re-used as a roll-up pencil pouch. This product is fabricated under the supervision of NID Andhra Pradesh in Guntur.
Etikoppaka toys: Andhra Pradesh
Etikoppaka village is known for its colourful hand-turned wood and lacquer toys. These charming dolls depicts traditional outfits in various colours. This combination is particularly created for this invitation box.
Ganjifa art: Karnataka
Traditional Ganjifa playing cards area speciality of Mysore. They are not just games but miniature works of art, with hand-painted designed based o folk stories and mythological tales. Here, this art is presented as an attractive fridge magnet.
Screw-pine weaving: Kerala
Women artisans in Kerala weave the locally abundant screw-pine leaves into items of practical and artistic value like mats and baskets. Here this craft is represented with a handwoven bookmark.
Kancheepuram silk: Tamil Nadu
The iconic handloom silk from Kancheepuram is known worldwide, for its richness and elegance and the skill of its weavers. It is showcased here with a beautiful, handcrafted pouch, which is produced at NID Gandhinagar campus
Bamboo box with kalamkari motifs
The invitation box is made with bamboo in various forms. These are traditional craft practices common in southern India, using sustainable and recyclable materials. National Bamboo Mission (NBM) encourages artisans to use these as a medium for livelihood. The box is decorated with kalamkari art, a textile paining technique from Andhra Pradesh. The preparation of the box goes through several steps, which is done at NID Bengaluru Campus.
The Coordination:
The coordination of the entire invitation kit preparation from design to production was done from NID Bengaluru campus under the leadership of Mr. Susanth C S, Dean, with the support of NID Ahmedabad and NID Andhra Pradesh. NID faculty members, staff, students, many artisans from various stets had contributed to this project. One of the major challenges was the preparation of bamboo box which have various components and details. However, the support by bamboo artisans from Kerala and NID team with their hard work made it possible to realise the large quantity in the short duration of time. The timely support and coordination by NID Andhra Pradesh with the artisans from Andhra and Telangana made the process faster to achieve it. NID accounts and administration especially Mr. Viral Rajyaguru and Mr. Ramakrishna Rao has provided all the timely support for a smooth process during the production.
